In Gavà Mar, a well-known seaside resort on the Catalan coast, white is the dominant color in the interiors of a refined holiday apartment overlooking the sea. There are very demanding challenges for architects; among these, one of the most insidious is monochromatic design.
BARCELONA TOTAL WHITE
08850, Gavà, Barcelona, Spain
Not at all intimidated by this possibility, Aleksandr Vashurkin, architect and designer of Alexvasdesign Studio, has signed an interesting total white interior design project for a large apartment close to the beaches of Gavà Mar, a seaside resort not far from Barcelona. “We therefore started to think about the various possibilities to offer this visual comfort by opting for an essential monochrome based on the shade of white”. A choice which, in addition to best responding to the owner’s wishes, offered the designer the opportunity to offer a sample of his compositional virtuosity.
Using a single colour, even white, represents an insidious choice, in architecture and also in art, because it requires perfection in the definition of balance and proportions. The natural materials used in the decoration, such as gray stone and natural oak, in addition to the simple shapes and straight lines, contributed to creating an essential, calm and serene atmosphere. “The white surfaces, like an untouched canvas, highlight the decorative elements and furniture that have been chosen to create an environment that is both comfortable and exclusive. Among these, many elements of Italian design, chosen from the catalog of prestigious brands including TonelliDesign, Meridiani, Alessi, Gallotti&Radice.
Also significant in defining the identity of this house is the dialogue with the overlooking horizon of the sky and the sea, favored, on the one hand, by the large floor-to-ceiling windows that frame broad views of this enchanting glimpse of the Mediterranean coast, and on the other by the play of reflections between the large full-height mirrors and the small and large surfaces in shiny metal and glass. In this ethereal atmosphere, a few colors other than white have been expertly dosed to offer a touch of warmth and emotion. Among these, the warm tones of the steam fireplace in the living space and the natural tones of the wooden furniture in the sleeping area, which give the most intimate and private rooms of the house an even more welcoming and relaxed atmosphere.
